Award winning Arab American journalist Ray Hanania was a finalist for the 33rd annual Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism and the Chicago Headline Club-Society of Professional Journalists on April 23.

Hanania received the Best In-depth Reporting in a Community Newspaper (Southwest News-Herald) Award, for his article on “Racism against grocer in Oak Lawn” This was his 4th Lisagor of which he received three others for column writing.

Hanania wrote a series about an Arab American grocer who claimed he was the victim of anti-Arab bias by the suburban village where his store was located. Hanania was the first and only journalist in the Chicagoland media to investigate the story. The grocer was targeted by village inspectors who were trying to shut him down. They arrested him and his wife and son in August 2009 after receiving a complaint that he was “storing” food (that was canned) in a vacant store next to his own. The 911 tapes of police showed – after weeks of Hanania’s efforts to get them – that the police had targeted him for being “Arab” – and that they were going to “shut down” the “Arab store owner.

A longtime, veteran Chicago political reporter, Hanania is an Arab-American journalist also known for his stand-up comedy. He writes an award winning column analyzing political and social issues for the Southwest Herald Newspaper. He also writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post Newspaper in Saudi Arabia on Middle East issues, a blog for the PalesdtineNote.com, and for the Arab American Writers Syndicate.

Hanania is the host of the morning radio talk show in Chicago, "Mornings with Ray Hanania," broadcast weekday mornings Monday thru Friday from 8 am until 9:30 AM on WJJG 1530 AM Radio and co-host of Radio Baladi (simulcast in Chicago and Dearborn) on WNZK 690 AM Radio and live on the Internet.
